Project Description
The Board of Governors at St Aloysius’College decided to design and construct a new Sports Building Complex on their site on Dalhousie Street, Glasgow, which was previously used as a playground and for car parking.
The development had to maintain a tenement garden area which separates the main new sports building and the existing Geography huts, half of which are to be demolished and re-built to be utilised as the new plant room for the sports building with an underground duct connecting the Geography Huts to the new building. The other half of the existing Huts are to be refurbished.
The principal elements of the brief which the College wished to have incorporated into the new building are:
- Open space for external games, assembly and parking.
- A multi-functional Sports Hall dimensioned for 4 badminton courts.
- A viewing gallery overlooking the sports hall.
- A Dance Studio and Gym.
- Ancillary spaces for social areas, changing rooms, staff accommodation, plant space and circulation.
Our Role / Scope
Our role in the project is to provide Project Management and Quantity Surveying from Project inception through tender and construction to completion.
Throughout the project Doig+Smith had an all-encompassing role incorporating all the pertinent issues, such as assisting St Aloysius’ College in developing their brief, management of the design team, risk management, tendering and stakeholder liaison, including management of liaison with neighbouring properties and tenants.
There was a particularly challenging tenant which required Doig+Smith to employ their dispute resolution and negotiation skills to successfully resolve the matter.
The development is a prominent new build structure set in a Conservation area adjacent to the Glasgow School of Art in the heart of Glasgow and required close liaison with Glasgow City Council’s Planning Department to agree suitable materials and overall aesthetic. It also included the removal and replacement of Mackintosh lighting columns.
We provided the principle interface between St Aloysius’ College, Design Consultants and Main Contractor throughout the project.
