STEM Ambassador for Careers and Schools Math Weeks

21st Oct 2020

Dean Carrick, Associate from our Edinburgh office, volunteered earlier in the year to become a STEM Ambassador…Then COVID 19 hit us and he assumed that there wouldn’t be much STEM activity for him to get involved in. But like we have all adapted to the new virtual working ways, so have Schools and the STEM Ambassador team.

Dean has been involved in providing video presentations to a number of schools on what it means to be a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and how Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths all play a part. Most recently it was MATHS WEEK in Primary Schools and Dean explained via a short video why Maths is so important to a QS… he then received questions and had to respond again by video.

Some of the questions posed following the videos provided;

  • Do you ever get your calculations wrong?
  • What’s the most expensive building you have worked on?
  • Why did you change career from the army?
  • Have you worked on any famous buildings?
  • Why do we have calculators?
  • What’s your favourite equation?
  • Why do you like maths, science, engineering, and technology?
  • What would the world be like without science?

It’s a good job Dean is a big old show off and likes to talk!

Schools facilitators says:

“The videos are brilliant. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our students’ questions. I know this will make a big difference to lots of young people in the school.”
