Construction Begins on New Allander Leisure & Day Care Centre

10th Mar 2021

Following a 12 month period of preparation and design, Doig+Smith and Pick Everard are delighted to announce commencement of construction on the new Allander Leisure and Day Care Centre for East Dunbartonshire Council. Through meticulous planning, the building works have been split into three distinct phases:

    • Phase 1: Construction of new Allander Leisure and Day Care Centre – proposed to open in autumn 2022
    • Phase 2: Decommission and demolition of existing leisure centre
    • Phase 3: Construction of a new ‘Sportsdrome’ and final car park works – due to be completed by summer 2023.

The first phase of this new leisure quarter will be constructed in a tandem build, allowing the existing Allander Leisure Centre to be utilised by residents (when current restrictions in place due to the pandemic are lifted) whilst construction continues. The existing ‘Sportsdrome’ will be demolished to make way for the new Allander Leisure and Day Care Centre.

The second phase will see the decommission and demolition of the existing Allander Centre, before the third and final phase gets underway – construction of the new football and tennis ‘Sportsdrome’. The two buildings will be linked with a series of car park and landscaping works – creating an appropriate setting for this state-of-the-art facility.

Councillor Andrew Polson, Joint Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, said, “A new era really has begun for the Allander, with construction underway on a new, state-of-the-art, multi-million pound complex – including support facilities for adults with learning disabilities.

“I look forward to seeing the Allander Leisure and Day Care Centre take shape, and hope patrons and residents can bear with us while works are carried out. I am pleased that the current Allander will be able to open during construction – when restrictions presently in place due to the pandemic are eased.”

Councillor Vaughan Moody, Joint Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, added, “This is brilliant news for East Dunbartonshire, Bearsden and Milngavie – representing a significant capital investment by the Council and delivering on a long-cherished dream.

“It has required a huge amount of endeavour to get to this stage, taking into account a wide range of views and working with a number of partners to achieve the best outcome possible. I’d like to pay tribute to everyone involved for their contributions and patience.”

Doig+Smith continue to provide Project Management and Supervisory services to East Dunbartonshire Council on this new and exciting chapter of the project and look forward to seeing the development unfold.
