Three of our trainee quantity surveyors recently visited the site of Robroyston train station, where Doig+Smith has been appointed as employer’s agent and quantity surveyor.
Work began on this project in January 2019 and is due to complete in December 2019 in time for Scotrail’s scheduled timetable change on this route.

Health & Safety Considerations
On any construction site, particularly a railway site where trains are passing through, health and safety is of critical importance. Our trainees were kitted out in full PPE including gloves, safety glasses and special orange high vizability suits, since train signals do not include the colour orange. (From a distance, a yellow high viz could look like a train signal).
Considerate Contractors
The Robroyston Station site has ‘Considerate Contractor’ status. Companies registered with this scheme must be committed to respecting the surrounding community, protecting the environment and securing everyone’s safety. The code of Considerate Practice is usually written into contracts and some clients may even request it.
The Highly Engineered Car Park
Due to the peaty land in the area surrounding the railway line, the station’s car park has been constructed to a very high specification and contains over 940 displacement piles.
Special GRP Panels on the Platform
The platform at the new Robroyston Train Station is made of glass reinforced plastic panels. Highly durable, this platform can withstand all weather conditions, and can be more easily adapted in the future, to suit differing train sizes.
Following the site visit, William Bowie, Director at Doig+Smith and Employer’s Agent on the Robroyston Station project, challenged our Trainees to put together a presentation about the experience. Not only did this give our trainees the opportunity to hone their presentation skills, it also allowed them to share the key learning points from the visit with their fellow colleagues.
