No Wrong Path: Army Apprentice to Associate Director

5th Aug 2021

Our Associate Director Dean Carrick began his career in the army, where he served for 10 years.

Starting out as an Apprentice Air Survey Technician, he gained qualifications in Cartography and progressed to become a Class 1 Terrain Analyst.

After leaving the army, Dean spent 7 years working at a Land Surveying firm as a Photogrammetrist before deciding he wanted to become a Quantity Surveyor.

As he pursued this career change, Dean was tenacious in his approach, contacting every surveying firm in Edinburgh. It was Doig+Smith who offered him a position as a Trainee QS, allowing him to study and work simultaneously and he has remained here ever since.

Dean is passionate about learning and professional development and has several qualifications in Quantity Surveying including an HNC, BSc Hons Degree and a Masters. Later this year his academic path will reach its peak when he concludes his Professional Doctorate to become the only practicing QS in Scotland with this qualification (as far as we know).

Tapping into this zest for learning and development, Dean was appointed as Training Manager at Doig+Smith, in a role that sees him co-ordinate a broad range of CPD sessions for our technical staff, as well as guiding our APC candidates on their journey to becoming chartered surveyors.

We are proud of all that Dean has achieved in his career and we look forward to celebrating his professional doctorate in the months ahead.
